How to Find a Paediatrician Who Understands ADHD (AU, UK, US Guide)

A diagnosis from the right specialist changes everything. Finding a paediatrician who genuinely understands ADHD — and has experience with its presentations, its co-occurring conditions, and the evidence-based management approaches — is worth investing time in.

In Australia

Developmental paediatricians are specialists in neurodevelopmental conditions including ADHD, autism, and learning differences. They have the most comprehensive training for childhood ADHD assessment and management.

How to find one: ask your GP for a referral specifically to a developmental paediatrician (not just a general paediatrician). Look for practices that specifically list neurodevelopmental assessment as a service. Developmental Paediatrics Australia has a directory.

ADHD Australia (adhdaustralia.org.au) maintains a directory of members who work with ADHD families and can often recommend specialists by region.

Wait times: public hospital developmental paediatrics clinics: 6 months to 2 years. Private developmental paediatricians: 4–16 weeks. University child psychology clinics: variable but often shorter than private, at reduced cost.

In the United Kingdom

ADHD assessment for children in the NHS is typically through CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services). Referral is through GP. Wait times are significant (12–24 months in many areas).

Private assessment through a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist or paediatrician with specific ADHD experience: 4–12 weeks, at significant cost (£500–£2,000 for a full assessment).

ADHD UK (adhduk.co.uk) and the ADHD Foundation maintain specialist directories. Look for professionals who are UKAAN members (UK ADHD Network Association) — these have the most current training.

In the United States

In the US, ADHD is typically diagnosed and managed by paediatricians, child psychiatrists, or neuropsychologists. Evaluation can also be requested through the school district at no cost.

CHADD (chadd.org) has a professional directory. Look for board-certified developmental and behavioural paediatricians for comprehensive assessment, particularly for children with complex presentations.

Questions to Ask Before Booking

"How many ADHD assessments do you conduct per year?" (Look for someone for whom ADHD is a significant part of their practice, not occasional.)

"Do you have experience with co-occurring conditions — autism, anxiety, learning differences?" (These are common and need integrated assessment.)

"What does your follow-up support look like after diagnosis?" (A diagnosis without ongoing support is less useful.)
